The Internet Protocol (The language computers use to talk to each other on the internet) knows each logical host interface by a number, the so-called IP address. On any given network, this number must be unique among all the host interfaces that communicate through this network. It is rather like each computer or device has its own phone number on the internet. Most ip numbers using the most common version of numbering have 4 numbers with dots in between like this 38.103.63.17 (That's your IP Address by the way)

The IP addresses of users browsing the world wide web are used to enable communications with the server of the web site. Also, it is usually in the header of email messages one sends. In fact, for all programs that utilize the TCP/IP protocol, the sender IP address and destination IP address are required in order to establish communications and send data

Its normal practice for all web servers to record logs of visits to their web site, these visits are recorded by IP address. A webmaster can learn things about you from your IP address (thouht not who is at the keyboard of the computer), but he can often tell where the computer is. Of course the reverse is true, you as an end user can find out where the web server really is, not every .com web site is hosted in the USA; they can be as far away as China. Use the tool at this web site to check if web servers are really where you think.
